About this course
Bed rails and bed transfer aids are commonly seen within our community for both aged care and disability clients. Recommendations for bedrails can result in increased risk to our clients, due to entrapment and risk of asphyxiation. So, how do we determine which clients will be suited to using bed rails and/or bed transfer aids?Â
In this short course, we explore the considerations for prescribing bed transfer aids as well as alternatives which could be implemented, when a bed rail is not appropriate. Â
This on-demand training is approximately 30 minutes (26 minutes to be exact!) and covers:
- The purpose of both bedrails and bed transfer aids, including the main difference between these aids
- Common risk factors
- Assessment including person; environment and entrapment risk considerations
- Consideration of alternative options which may be prescribed to support clients functional needs and goals
- Maintenance considerations once a bed transfer aid is prescribed to ensure ongoing safety and suitability
The license of this course also includes FREE downloadable resources including – Bed Transfer Aid Acknowledgement of Risk Consent Form; and Client Factsheets: Bed Transfer Aids (Fixed & Unfixed) which can be provided to clients to understand the risk; installation and use of bed transfer aids.Â

This course is instructed by Rachael Hayes (B Occupational Therapy, Honours), AHPRA registered Occupational Therapist.
Rachael is an Occupational Therapist entering her 5th year of clinical practice, working within the paediatric, aged care and disability sectors, to support individuals to increase their independence and engagement in activities that are important to them.Â
Rachael has worked across both the aged care and disability funding bodies, providing assessment and recommendations for required supports, equipment, assistive technology, skill development and home modifications.Â
Rachael thrives in collaborating with clients and their key supports to achieve client / family centred practice, to assist in the achievement of their individualised goals and enhance their quality of life. Rachael is passionate about empowering other allied health clinicians to feel confident in their service provision and skillset, to improve client outcomes and experiences within the health sector.

This was a helpful course to give a baseline understanding of assessments for bed rails and transfer aids. It would have been nice to get more detail on bed rails specifically, as most of the risk assessment information referenced transfer aids, not bed rails.
