Functional Capacity Assessment Services
A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is a comprehensive evaluation conducted by an Occupational Therapist to assess an individual’s ability to perform daily tasks and activities.
It focuses on physical, cognitive, and functional abilities to determine what level of supports and services an NDIS participant may need to live a more normal life as well as achieve their goals.
We deliver FCAs for NDIS participants of all ages, providing services at home, via telehealth, or at community locations.

- We also have a dedicated adults team supporting NDIS participants over the age of 18.
Community Therapy is passionate about being the right provider to support a participant, which means we will advise you if we believe we are, or are not, the right provider for you to consider.
People can access Community Therapy’s services by inquiring via our website, calling, or submitting a referral form.
How are FCAs Delivered?
The first step is to contact Community Therapy, and we will book an appointment.
Services are then delivered in one of three ways:
- At your home, as we are a mobile provider and do not have a clinic
- Via Telehealth
- At an alternative community location, such as a library meeting room
Community Therapy is NDIS registered and we will support a person before, during and after their appointment.
The service is delivered by experienced Occupational Therapists with the goal of ensuring a participant’s NDIS plan is suitable for them.
What does a FCA Involve?
A Functional Capacity Assessment evaluates almost all areas of a person’s life, namely;
- Physical mobility
- Personal care
- Cognitive skills
- Communication
- Social engagement
- Household management
- Work and education
An Occupational Therapist will review these areas holistically, and make recommendations towards improving them.

FAQ
-
Can Community Therapy be engaged for an assessment only?
Yes, however in most cases, we will be requested to provide additional services, such as ongoing Physiotherapy, Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Exercise Physiology or Dietetics.
There is a range of other assessments and therapy services that we provide such as assistive technology, equipment prescription and home modifications.
-
How does a functional capacity assessment relate to mental healthcare?
No matter the disability that a person is living with and currently funded for, a functional capacity assessment is able to be completed to support recommendations of future services or changes to their plan and the reasonable and necessary supports being sought.
The functional capacity assessment that Community Therapy has refined and continues to refine is able to accommodate all types of disabilities.
The primary difference with how a functional capacity assessment and report is completed relative to the type of disability, including mental health conditions is the type of objective measures that may be completed by the Occupational Therapist or Allied health professional and the NDIS participant.
-
What other medical professionals may be involved?
Often, Community Therapy will seek any other medical reports and supporting documentation such as medical tests and imaging from your general practitioner or your specialist, or possible communication (phone, video conference) with them on behalf of our client.
This can involve a range of different medical specialties, sometimes that will be part of the functional capacity assessment and with the consent of the NDIS participant.
