At Community Therapy, our Paediatric Dietitians work with children and their families to support healthy growth, nutrition and eating habits. We understand that every child is unique, and mealtimes can sometimes feel challenging, stressful or overwhelming.

Our Dietitians provide practical, evidence-based support tailored to your child’s individual needs, helping families feel confident and supported every step of the way.
Whether your child is a fussy eater, has feeding difficulties, allergies, medical conditions or specific nutritional needs, we are here to help.

Why Paediatric Dietetics?

Supporting healthy growth and nutrition

Improving eating and mealtime experiences

Empowering families with practical strategies

At Community Therapy, we believe that food should be nourishing, enjoyable and free from unnecessary stress.

Our Dietitians take a family-centred, neuroaffirming approach, recognising that every child has their own strengths, preferences, sensory experiences and relationship with food. We work alongside parents and caregivers to develop practical strategies that respect each child’s individual needs while supporting positive mealtime experiences.

Rather than focusing on “fixing” eating behaviours, we aim to understand the reasons behind them and provide evidence-based support that is realistic, achievable and meaningful for each family.

Our goal is not only to support nutritional outcomes, but also to build confidence, independence and positive relationships with food for the whole family.

At What Age Can a Child See a Dietitian?

Children can benefit from dietetic support at any age, from infancy through to adolescence.

Whether you're introducing solids, managing feeding challenges, supporting healthy growth or navigating a medical diagnosis, our Dietitians provide practical, evidence-based support tailored to your child's stage of development.

When Should My Child See a Paediatric Dietitian?

Many parents wonder whether their child’s eating habits are simply a phase or whether additional support may be helpful.

A Paediatric Dietitian can assist when there are concerns about your child’s nutrition, growth, feeding skills or relationship with food. Whether you’re looking for general nutrition advice or support with a specific feeding challenge or medical condition, our Dietitians provide practical, evidence-based strategies tailored to your child’s individual needs.

You may benefit from seeing a Paediatric Dietitian if your child:

  • Is a fussy or selective eater, or has a very limited range of foods
  • Has difficulty with feeding or transitioning to solids
  • Has concerns with growth, weight gain, weight loss or nutritional intake
  • Has food allergies, intolerances, coeliac disease or digestive concerns such as constipation or reflux
  • Has sensory sensitivities or developmental differences that impact eating, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or ADHD
  • Has a medical condition, disability or complex health needs that affect nutrition
  • Needs general dietary advice or support with healthy eating habits
  • Would benefit from lunchbox strategies and support for school
  • Is developing independence and would benefit from practical kitchen skills, nutrition education or building confidence with food preparation
  • Is receiving tube feeding or transitioning away from tube feeding

We work collaboratively with children, families and other members of the care team to develop practical, achievable strategies that fit into everyday life.

If you’re unsure whether your child would benefit from seeing a Paediatric Dietitian, our friendly team is happy to discuss your concerns and help determine whether dietetic support may be appropriate.

Paediatric Dietetic FAQs

  • Does my child need a referral to see a Dietitian?

No. Children can access dietetic services without a referral. However, some funding pathways may require specific documentation.

  • What happens during the first appointment?

The initial appointment focuses on getting to know your child, understanding your concerns, reviewing their nutritional needs and developing goals together.

  • Can you help with fussy eating?

Yes. Fussy and selective eating is one of the most common reasons families seek support from a Paediatric Dietitian. We provide practical strategies that support both nutrition and positive mealtime experiences.

  • What funding options are available for Paediatric Dietetic Services?

Our Paediatric Dietetic Services may be available through:

    • NDIS funding
    • Private health insurance (depending on your cover)
    • Private paying clients
    • Medicare referrals where eligible

If you’re unsure whether you can access funding for dietetic services, our friendly team can help guide you through the options.

  • Do you work with NDIS participants?

Yes. We support self-managed, plan-managed and NDIA-managed participants where appropriate.

  • Can a Paediatric Dietitian support children with disability or developmental differences?

Supporting Children with Disability and Developmental Needs

Absolutely. Our Paediatric Dietitians support children with a wide range of disabilities, developmental differences and complex health needs. This may include children with:

    • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
    • ADHD
    • Developmental delays
    • Sensory processing differences
    • Genetic conditions
    • Physical disabilities
    • Complex medical needs

We work collaboratively with families to develop practical nutrition and mealtime strategies that align with each child’s goals and everyday life.

When appropriate, we also work alongside our Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists and Physiotherapists to provide coordinated, holistic care that supports your child’s health, wellbeing and participation.
