A Local Fisherman’s Wonderful Story

One of our clients was a 58-year-old from Cooks Hill who is an enthusiastic fisherman and had had knee replacement surgery. He was eager to get back to fishing as soon as possible, so he engaged Community Therapy for his six-week rehabilitation at home program.

When we first started with him, our Physiotherapist did a thorough post-operative assessment to look at his range of motion, swelling, pain levels and his risk of post surgical complications such as deep vein thrombosis, among many other things.

We moved forward by tailoring an exercise program to aid his recovery, while also incorporating more challenging exercises to help with his strength and balance as well.

He made great progress, and towards the end of the program, we conducted one of his sessions near the harbour to assess his safety of returning to fishing early. He was able to recommence fishing from the jetty at week 4 for a short period of time and at the end of our six-week rehabilitation program, he was back out in his boat fishing, which he loved!

In the coming months, he’ll be strong enough to manage his fishing kayak again too!

When asked where the best fish Newcastle were located, he politely declined to answer!
